Cleo's Time at Whetu and Nick

~Whetu & Nick Recount~

We were finally going to the theatre to see Whetu and Nick. I was way beyond excited, I was ecstatic, to see the film. The one thing I liked was how Nick tried to offer Whetu a handshake but instead, Whetu went into a Hongi. A Hongi is when you welcome someone into your own personal bubble and exchange their breath.

The one thing I liked is how Whetu spoke Maori for the entire show because Lesina and I found it easy to understand, what she was saying. I was kind of bored though. It was super annoying because the school behind us kept talking. It made it hard to hear the show and my tolerance levels were getting lower each time they chatted.

The special effects were amazing and blew me away, although the lightning sound effect scared me. The voice-over for Ta Whiri Matea was also pretty mysterious yet amusing. I also found the props on the stage were pretty realistic. Whetu and Nick had their differences. While Nick used his gadgets such as a compass, Whetu used the traditional Maori way by using nature and her navigation skills.

Nick wasn’t the only one who was curious. Whetu was intrigued by Nick’s telescope. Luckily his telescope helped Whetu to find her kite (Manu tukutuku) her only connection to find her Whanau. Ta Whiri Matea, the wind God, helped Whetu and Nick with their journey by blowing their boat across the sea.

Soon enough Captain Cook was unaware of Nick not being on the ship and left him on the Island. Nick started to worry. This made me very worried as well but somewhat excited. Soon enough Whetu managed to find her Whanau with Nick’s telescope and invited Nick along to visit her parents.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing another theatre show. I would like to see another show in the theatre. I’d love to see a longer and more detailed version of Whetu and Nick.  Maybe Whetu could have spoken more English for others to understand. But in the end… I really enjoyed watching it and hope we could see it again!

Cleo's Basketball Recount

~Basketball Recount~

The date was August 8th, 2019. Yesterday was a very painful, yet happiest
time I’ve ever experienced. We were heading to the North Shore Event
Centre for our basketball game which was over the bridge. All of us showed
up and we were just waiting for the taxi van to pick us up. It was supposed to
pick us up at 8:45 AM but instead, it took ages to arrive at our school. By the
time the taxi arrived, at the North Shore Event Centre, it was 9:50 AM. We
had already missed out on our first game. The taxi driver apologised to us
and we headed over the bridge. Melita, Ana, and Reyna were sitting in the
front while Anna, Me, Lesina, and Meron were sitting at the back.

After waiting for a bit, we had finally driven over the bridge and we made it
to our destination. We had noticed that many girls were way taller than us.
We even noticed Lily, Paige, and Samantha at the competition. Our old
CTK students. Our first game started and we were versing Kowhai School.
Some of those girls played for clubs while some others gave it a go. It was
a tough competition but we pulled through.

You know the saying, “Its all fun in games until someone gets injured”. Well
sadly for us, one of our best played, Reyna, sprained her ankle. First Lesina
stopped, then I did, then Reyna bumped into me and she fell down, injuring
her ankle. She had to be lifted up by the coach and we were left with one
sub.

That caused a major difference to our play style. We started to lose our
competitive spirit. That was until we saw Auckland Normal Intermediate girls
on the same court as us. Most of their players were short so we had a chance.
Altogether we scored ten goals and we got motivated to carry on. One thing
that annoyed me was when this Auckland Normal Intermediate girl with curly
hair kept on shaking her bum in front of us when she defended. We all
complained that it was weird and uncomfortable, but also very funny.

Ever since we played, that opened my eyes to what basketball players have
to go through. It was a very memorable moment for all of us. In the end,
we got picked up and kept on laughing during the drive back. Reyna, Lesina,
and Anna were laughing the most. Overall, I liked getting to have a change
in routine and was vehemently happy with our result. Although we lost all our
games, we still had fun. Maybe next time we could try something like this
again.

How long is your Mintie Wrapper By Cleo

How long is your Mintie Wrapper?

Who got the longest Mintie Wrapper and Why?
I got the longest Mintie Wrapper. It was 90cm long. My wrapper was the longest because I took my time
and was really patient.
I remembered what Sayonara did last year. Reupena got 74cm and his wrapper was the second longest.
His was only 16cm away from me.

Who got the shortest Mintie Wrapper?
Kale got the shortest because he got 7cm. The reason I think he got the shortest wrapper is that he
rushed it and didn’t
take his time. He might have been new to this task.

Who got the same Mintie Wrapper?

Sione and Miss Virginia got the same measurement because they were helping each other out.
They both got 65cm

Unsung Hero: Information Report By Cleo

Princess Diana
Image result for princess diana

Princess Diana was the most caring person to ever meet. Princess Diana was the mother of Prince Harry and Prince William. She was homeschooled until the age of nine. Her full name was Diana Frances Spencer. Some people also liked to consider her as “Shy Di” because of how timid she was.

She was born on July 1st, 1961. After being homeschooled she was sent to boarding school, which was also known as Benenden School. When she had finished, Princess Diana had A- grades in Maths, History and Politics. Before marrying Prince Charles, she was educated in teaching as a Kindergarten teacher. She had rapidly evolved into an icon of grace, elegance and glamour.

Being a Princess wasn’t all about a rich life! She had suffered from postnatal depression, low-self esteem, eating disorders, and the mounting strain of being watched or bothered by the paparazzi and the royal watchers.

Diana was the third child in her family. Her sibling’s names were Charles Spencer, Jane Fellowes, and Lady Sarah. She was also the youngest daughter of John Spencer.

Marrying Prince Charles wasn’t the only thing that made her famous. She had devoted her time to charities. At one point she was a patron for over one hundred charities. During her many visits to hospitals, schools, and fundraising galas, she became known for spending hours talking and listening to people’s stories. Afterwards, she led a campaign to ban landmines, she changed people’s perceptions of HIV and AIDS, and most importantly, she was a devoted mother towards her children.

Princess Diana is by far, the most inspirational unsung hero of all. She has changed a lot of things in the world. Diana educated and had taken her children to the other side of the world to tell them “Life isn’t all about the rich.”. Without her being there, the world would be so much different to how it is today. Sadly, she had died on August 31st 1997. She had died in a car crash in this Paris tunnel because the paparazzi had chased her car early hours of the morning. When they stopped the car, the media didn’t realise she was in the car with her bodyguard and her boyfriend Dodi Al fayed. She was probably the most photographed woman to ever live. She will be missed for her charitable work. She is a true angel and hero to humanity. Princess Diana was the ultimate unsung hero.

Meet the stars in Room 1: Introducing Cleo

Cleo is one of our star students in Room 1 this year. We look forward to sharing her learning on this blog throughout this year.

Hello, my name is Cleo and my birthday is in February.  I’m 10 turning 11. As part of my birthday celebration, I am going to the beach with my family. Whenever I spend time with my family I get really happy because I love spending time with my three brothers. I am Maori, Samoan, German, European and a little bit Chinese. I am also very good when it comes to specific subjects like Writing because I’m excellent at using descriptive words.
I love animals and I own a tabby cat named Isis. She is a female and she’s very chubby. One of the things I enjoy is doing sports because you get to miss a day of school, see your friends and represent the school in a good way. I also enjoy animation and drawing! Reyna is my favourite cousin and Lesina is my best friend. I enjoy spending time with them and we always make funny jokes about what happened during the weekend.
This year I am looking forward to all the teams I’ll be joining. I’m vehemently looking forward to the years 7 and 8 soccer team because when it comes to soccer I am very passionate about it. I’m also looking forward to the results for the School Captains, House Captains and Service Captains because I am one of the people who have entered into the draw. I’m hoping I’ll become Mangawhai’s House Captain so I can give myself the opportunity to become a leader.

My Algebra Art By Cleo

Making a sequential pattern -
Romero Britto

  1. Are you pleased with your artwork? Why / why not?

I am very pleased with my artwork because I managed to finish it in time. I was the first person to paint and complete it.

2. What was challenging when you did your sequential pattern artwork?
It was challenging because It was impossible to keep the paint within the lines.

3. What could you adapt/modify with your artwork?

I would choose different patterns such as using different shapes and perhaps more in the way of cultural patterns.

4. Who / what helped you with your sequential pattern artwork?

Whenever I look a Romero Britto’s art it helped inspire me to make more patterns.

5. If you were to teach a new person how to create your artwork under your theme (Romero Britto or Aboriginal Art) what would be the teaching points/tips?

Do it on a normal paper / Plan
Draw it big
Do it on another big paper
Vivid it
Use paints
Colour within the lines
Vivid it again.

6. What have you learnt about this process?

I learnt that making Romero Britto’s art is a wonderful process and now I know how to colour within the lines and draw sequential patterns.

Chocolate Disaster By Cleo

Richard Hudson arrived in Dunedin and opened up his first biscuit bake house. All of a sudden, cups of tea had never tasted so good. At that time it was the year 1868, Richard Hudson was the first person to begin the chocolate franchise. In 1930 Mr Hudson and Cadbury teamed up to make New Zealand’s first bar of Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate.

New Zealand had a beautiful Cadbury Chocolate Factory. Chocolate was made here in New Zealand for over 150 years, and nearly everyone loved the sweet, mouth watering taste of chocolate. Until one sad day...  The Cadbury chocolate factory was moving to Australia and my thoughts on this aren’t that nice.

Some people thought it was a nightmare but for me I was scared. I’m afraid that Australia might change the recipe for everyone’s beloved chocolates for example they might change Pineapple lumps or even chocolate bars.

It says that the manufacturer failed, I don’t know why but it’s sad. I’m hoping that Australia won’t change anything and they’ll just stick to the original recipe. I bet the impact will be tragic to all kiwis (People) in New Zealand because it was such an honour to make chocolates here in New Zealand and now the opportunity is gone.

The impact is a very big one because since the factory has closed some people have lost their jobs. As a result some people will not be able to pay their bills or even make anymore chocolate here in New Zealand. It’s such a shame that we don’t have the privilege to make chocolate anymore. It’ll also be hard for some people who have been working there for 30-40 years to find jobs. As time goes on you’ll grow older and it’ll make it harder to find a good paying job.

But in the end of the day New Zealand will lose big time because Australia is taking all the credit and whenever someone buys chocolate instead of the money going to New Zealand instead it’ll go to Australia.

Cleo's time at the Cordis Hotel

I was so happy, today was the day! On Monday our class, Room 1 got the privilege of going to a very fancy hotel. Of course I was excited because it was a hotel after all! I was interested to see what it looked like but we weren't just there to observe it. We went there to do some coding. It was a posh and elegant hotel, we even had our own little space with our very own laptops.

After a while of learning more people came and everything was busier than it originally was. Honestly I felt like I was famous because people began to interview us about the site Scratch. This was the site we used to code and it was such an amazing site to use. The game we made was a Ghostbusters game where we caught ghosts and maybe other things that could grant you more points.

Scratch is so cool isn’t it? Pictures were taken, Interviews started and lots of other things happened. Before we were going to leave this amazing Coding Club workshop some people got to show off their fantastic games and those people were... Melianna, Cleo (me) and Charlee. Melianna made a different type of design for her game which was what made it unique! Charlee added in four characters to her game which made it hard! My game had sound effects and five characters which gave you a different amount of points! and that was it! I bet we were all so sad because I could tell we all enjoyed it. It was such an amazing experience and I enjoyed it. I thought it was great having a fancy hotel hosting this event.
