Zariah's Time at MOTAT

My time at MOTAT
Introduction
My time at MOTAT, was the greatest place I have visited this year.
There was a little village, a red building, mini classroom, a mini-church, pump house, and so
many
other things. I was excited because it was my first time going. In my group there was Miss Wu,
Melita, Cleo, Ana, and Mikkie.
When I put my first step into MOTAT it was like a little town in an amusement park. We went to
our meeting place and a person introduced himself to our school. His name was Kent. He was
our helper. After he introduced himself we were able to eat morning tea. I felt so excited that I
didn’t want to eat because I wanted to go into check everything out  as quickly as possible.

Village
In the village, there were five mini houses but two houses we weren't able to go into. The first
house
was near the entryway. In it was a creepy doll in a crib, a fireplace and other things from the
olden days. The second house was connected to another place. Beside it was a long drop with
a very creepy doll inside. A long drop is an outside toilet. I thought there was nothing inside the
long drop but one of my group members freaked out when she was looking at the doll. In the
village there was a little church near a garden. The church was like all the other churches but
smaller. There were chairs, a piano, a lectern and a bible.

Inventors room
The next thing we went to was the Inventor's room. The first thing I saw were games on
little platforms. Next to it was a room that had a mural of cricketers painted on the wall. There was a human foot sculpture next to a woman's head sculpture. Beside the entry there was a rocket room with no real rocket. Then we went to a room with a bouncy trampoline and a game. The game entailed jumping on the trampoline to kill these aliens. I had to kill as many as I could within the set time. I got 29 points.

The Technology Room
The Technology room had old computers on display and it was fun to see. There were so many
telephones that I couldn’t count them all. Another thing that was there were typewriters,
old cameras, and even a selfie-machine. I wasn’t able to get a turn so I went to a different room
that had video games. There were two iPads that had a racing game called turbo on the iPads.
I was too distracted that I couldn’t see the rest of the rooms.

Scavenger hunt
A few minutes later we went back to our little meeting place to get the Scavenger Hunt
instructions from this hot pink box. We had to go to the Fire Station, the Pump house,
the school, and the village. My group instructed Miss Wu to go to the red house near the Village.
I thought the two buildings were connected but instead, there was a room full of telephones.
There was one that looked like it came from England. After finding the telephones we needed to
find hats, boots, medals, axes, ladders, headlights and way more. I was really serious about find
ing all the things from the list but I was distracted by Cleo and Ana because they were looking at
the fake horse and petting it like it was a real horse.

A few minutes later we went to a room that looked liked a small classroom. We had to find
pencils and corks, and a map. Then we had to sing the national anthem but we didn't know
that we couldn't speak Maori so we just left without anyone knowing. Then we went to the
village and went to find, dolls, beds, pots, eggs, cards, and other things. We weren't able to
go to the Pump House because we had to go back and have lunch. I was sitting with my
friends near the corner with Miss Virginia. I was having a small chit chat and then I drank
some water. Then out of nowhere I accidentally, without even thinking I poured water all over
myself. I felt so embarrassed and so mad at myself.

Tram ride
Then we went to the tram area that was outside of MOTAT. There were two olden day
trams near the entrance. When we went on the tram ride I was sitting next to Cleo, Ana, Melita.
We were playing games until the tram stopped and we saw baby pukekos. They looked so
small and fluffy. They looked like a small baby chick from the farm at my parent's friends house.
After a while, of looking at the pukekos we stopped at the same tram stop that we initially got on.
Then after we have stopped the tram driver, Rob, told us about the tram. There was a line on the
top that was connected to the tram. Rob told us information about how the tram works and
explained to us about this grate at the bottom of the tram. The grate stopped the tram from
running over a person back in the olden days. After Miss Paton took a picture of the class.
She asked that the small students were in the front and tall students were in the back.
Then we went back to MOTAT to go to see the Above and Beyond exhibition.

Above & Beyond.
First, we went to the meeting place to see if everyone was there and ready to go to
Above and Beyond. I took my super, small water bottle in my pocket just in case I got thirsty.
I definitely regretted bringing my water bottle because my friends pranked me. When I took
my first step everything looked so cool, there were so many flying related games,
and information that told us about flying. The first thing I wanted to do was this game.
The simulator game that taught us how to fly like a bird and be like a bird. It was really
fun to play. Then I saw this attraction that it would fly up then come down. Just like a rocket.
After looking for Miss Wu I found her playing a game behind a plane simulator. It looked
really cool, but also very confusing. When it was time to go, I was sad because I wanted to
stay and keep on playing at the Above and Beyond exhibition.
Educator - Experiments
When we went out of Above and Beyond we went straight to the classroom near the
Inventor’s room, but we went in a completely different direction. The room was a bit small
but big to do plenty of activities. We sat down on the floor and saw Kent. Kent told us about
how planes work, then he showed us different experiments at every station. One was how to
make small aircraft that could play in this wind machine. At the next station there was a spinning
toy that we had to try and aim at this target. The third station was with a blow dryer, ping pong
ball and a cup. The cup was just to put the ball in, but me and my friends tried to put the ping
pong ball and make it float on the blow dryer. The fourth station there was two toys and we had
to drop them both at the same time and see which one drops first and why? The fifth station,
there was a cup of water and a piece of laminate paper. We had to place the laminated paper
on top of the cup of water then but it upside down and see if the water in side the cup would
either fall into the bucket or the water would stay in side the cup. The sixth station was with
these toys. They had string with some cardboard in the middle of the string. We had to put it
near the huge fan outside of the classroom to see if the cardboard flew up or down the string.
It was common for the cardboard to fly in the middle of the string.

Conclusion

It was fun while it lasted but then we had to go. Everyone in our school met Kent in the meeting
place. I had a lot of fun at M.O.T.A.T. There were so many places I had visited and there were
so many things to do. MOTAT is probably my favourite trip I have been on so far. It was most
satisfying to see how times had changed from the 1800’s until now. Before going to MOTAT
I thought it was really small and it only had a few activities to do and look at. However when
walked through the entrance it just looked like the olden days that I thought it was really cool.
I will Differently recommend MOTAT to my family and friend. MOTAT is really like a big
aquarium looking through the glass and seeing hundred of years fishing still living on earth,
and everyone felt secure and safe because as far as I know, there was no injury at all. I am
looking forward for my brother, Valter, to come to christ the king soon to see MOTAT and enjoy
his time.

Betty's Symmetry Art

This is my symmetry art. I it found easy to colour in the segments. I found tracing the pattern on the paper challenging because the cardboard paper kept moving a lot. Next time I will change the colours  so that they contrast and stand out more. I'm most proud my pattern that I created.

Athena's MOTAT Recount

Image result for motat logo
We went to MOTAT. The first place we went to was the village.
We saw dummies. There was a church The chapel had some chairs. The lectern was in the
shape of an Eagle.  There were flowers on the table the chapel reminded me of a Church
because it was white and also peaceful.

After the chapel my group went to the school house. The school house had a blackboard
with old fashioned pencils  and old fashioned books. At the front of the classroom there
was a blackboard. On the blackboard there were some maths problems to learn. In the
School house you weren't allowed to speak Maori. In the school house there were wooden
tables. The wooden tables had wooden chairs attached to them. Back in the olden days
the teacher would come around the class and would look at the students fingernails. If
your fingernails were dirty the teacher would smack your hands with a wooden cane.

Then we went to the Inventor’s room. It had games and a trampoline room. I felt excited
because I got to jump  on the aliens. I didn't do very but I still got 30 points.

Then we  went to the Pump House.
It was impressive because there was a boiler room. It was not working during the day we
went.  After the Pumphouse it was lunch time. I had a sandwich and a piece of fruit. I had
lunch with my mum.
After lunch it was time to go on the tram. I was excited to go on the tram. Rob was our
driver. On the way we saw  baby pukeko with their mum and dad.

Then we went to the Above and Beyond exhibition.
My favourite game was the one with the flying bird. It was so much fun.
After this we went to the classroom. There were experiments. The first experiment
was making a light aircraft and putting it in front of the fan to see if it would fly to the
top or stay at the bottom.

The next experiment was the one with the ping pong ball that you had to use a blow
dryer to see if you could get the ping pong ball into the cup. the next experiment used
water in a cup and a piece of card. You had to turn the cup upside down to see how much
suction there was in the cup. The last experiment was standing with a big piece of card in
front of the fan.

After the classroom we went on the bus to go back to school.

I was very sad that we were leaving MOTAT to go back to school. It was the best day
ever.

My MOTAT Recount By Carolyn

Hook/Intro
I couldn’t believe my eyes when I went to MOTAT and saw how much technology there was. I was bursting to go to the Above and Beyond exhibition. Although I was disappointed when all of the old displays were gone, I still had a great time.

Scavenger Hunt
The first thing we did when we got to MOTAT was the scavenger hunt. The first place we needed to go was the fire station. At the fire station we had to find hoses, boots, axes, medals, wheels, helmets, etc. After we found everything in the fire station we went to the village. In the village there were lots of cottages. In the cottages there was glass to protect the displays. In the village we needed to find kettles, dummies, eggs, cribs, beds, washboards (wash room) and more. The next place we had to go was the school house. In there we had to solve the maths problems on the chalkboard, find slate boards and pencils, find a map, and sing the national anthem. When we finished visiting the school house there wasn’t enough time to go to the Pump house.

Above and Beyond
After the scavenger hunt, we went to the newest exhibition in MOTAT called Above and Beyond. Above and Beyond is an exhibition given to MOTAT from NASA the space organisation. In Above and Beyond room there were lots of different things. There were some games and a bird flying simulator. One of my favourite games was a game where you were up in space. There was debris/rubbish that you have to pick up with different robots. If you picked the wrong robot it would minus your points. There was also a magnet elevator that would drop the block down if it reaches the top.

Tram ride
Next, we went outside of MOTAT 1 to go to the tram station where the tram would pick us up. Our tram driver was Rob. Rob drove us to MOTAT 2. Along the way we went past a family of baby pukekos. They were with their Mum and Dad. It looked like the pukekos were small and fluffy. We also went past Auckland Zoo. When we got to MOTAT 2 Rob told us to stand on the tracks in front of the tram. We were all thinking “Oh no the tram is going to run us over.” But no, we were going to have a picture. After the picture, Rob told us that the metal pole that links to the tram and power line transports 600-700 bolts. If you touched it, you would die.

Educator and Experiments
After having lunch we entered a blue building to meet our educator Kent. Kent took us up some stairs near the Innovators Room to a classroom. Our classroom was called Discovery 1. In the classroom we learnt the forces of flight which are lift, thrust, drag, and weight. Kent set up seven different experiments. My favourite experiment was making an aircraft to put in this wind tube. My second favourite one was a hairdryer and a ping pong ball.

Exhibits
After the class we went to the Pumphouse/ boiler room. I thought that the Pumphouse would be hot and filled with the smell of coal and smoke. I was really disappointed because it was cold and dissolated. Not a single trace of smoke and heat. Next to the Pumphouse there was a car exhibit. In the car exhibit there were old vintage cars and racing cars. There was also a tractor. The tractor was green with a red handle and steering wheel. The wheels were very big and fat. In the corner there was a wedding car. A wedding car in the olden days  would have had no cover. The bride and groom would sit in the back of the car with the driver at the front. Next we went to the Technology room. In the Technology room there were lots of TVs, old phones, the first telephone and some rotary phones. There was also a selfie machine that took real selfies. Part of the display had some of the first video games like Pacman, King Kong and Donkey Kong. There was also a morse code sending device.

Conclusion

At the end of the day as always we had to go back to school. My favourite part of M.O.T.A.T. was Above and Beyond with all the games and the bird simulator. Even though they removed all the good old displays I was still very happy and had lots of fun. I really want to go back to M.O.T.A.T. again because there is always something new to see.

My Time at MOTAT By Rhianne

This is my MOTAT recount  it took to weeks to write. I have been learning to elaborate my ideas fully into paragraphs.

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I went to MOTAT. I hadn’t been to MOTAT
in such a long time that I forgot what it looked like. I was so excited to see
the Above and Beyond exhibition. I was quite disappointed because most of
their best exhibitions were gone, but I still enjoyed my time at MOTAT.

The first thing we did was the scavenger hunt. My group saw a lot of old
fire trucks, some boots, helmets, medals, wheels, hoses, and axes. During the
scavenger hunt we went to find things at the village. We needed to find some
kettles, dolls, eggs, cribs, beds, washboards ( In the washroom). After we
went to the village we had to go to the school house. My group sat at the
desks and there was also cool writing on the desk! We all stood by the table
and sang the national anthem. The boys were so funny when they sang it.
Did you know that every morning the teachers would check the students
finger nails and if they were dirty the teacher would slap the kids nails
with a cane.

Above And Beyond

When we finished the scavenger hunt we went to a new exhibition in MOTAT.
It was called Above and Beyond. There were a lot of exhibitions about flight.
The fun part about Above and Beyond was the space simulator. You had to
go in and stand. It looked like you were actually in space. There was a
countdown and it looked like you were in an elevator. Another one of my
favourite displays was a space game. You had to take as much junk as you
could with robots. I was winning until Reupena came and took over my
game and made me come third place.

Tram ride
After we went to Above and Beyond we went on the tram ride. We waited
for a bit at the station until we met our driver Rob. Rob drove us around the
zoo and around MOTAT 2. There were a lot of interesting facts about the tram.
When we were driving back to MOTAT we slowed down to some baby
pukekos and some older pukekos. The babies were so small and cute. They
were almost the size of Rob’s fist. Me and my group said “AWWW they’re
so cute!”. After we stopped, we took a picture in front of the tram.
Some of the boys in my group thought that Rob was going to run us over.
When we were walking back from the tram ride we bumped into Miss Paton
and Toakase. They were asking where the tram rides were.

Then we went to have lunch. Me and my group sat and ate and had a little
conversation. When we had finished eating we went with Kent our educator
and he took us to the room upstairs near the innovators room. It was called
Discovery One. Kent told us lots of things about flight. He made a slideshow
about it. He also set out some stations around the room so we could try them
out. The station I liked most was when we had to make a creation. We would
have to throw it up in the air tube and if it came out from the bottom it had
too much weight. If it came out from the top it was too light. We also learnt
about the forces of flight. There was lift, drag,  thrust, and weight.

The Telephone room

When we were walking out we walked to the telephone room. There were old
telephones like rotary telephones, communication collection and lots more.
On some of the telephones we could communicate with each other. Me and
Juliana were playing round with the telephone. After we finished visiting the
telephone room we walked to the car room. There were heaps of olden day
cars like race cars, vintage cars, a tractor and a wedding car. There was also a
steering wheel that we could try out. Me and Betty went on top of this white
deck and we acted like we were the Queens of the car room. We didn’t let
anyone on top. After we went to the car room we went into the Technology
room there were games, old TVs, old phones, a selfie machine and a morse
code sending device. Me and my friends and Virginia took a picture at the
selfie machine. There were also a lot of games such as Donkey Kong, Pacman,
a Jungle game, King Kong and much more. Then we had to go back to school.

Conclusion

My favourite part of MOTAT was Above and Beyond because there were a
lot of fun games to try and it looked liked we were actually in space. The
worst part of MOTAT was the Pump House because nothing was working and
operating it. I really enjoyed my time at MOTAT and I would love to go there
with my friends and family in the holidays.

Cleo's Home Language Introduction in Maori

This is Cleo's introduction in Maori. She has personalised it to link to her family background.
