Poupou Art Reflection By Ferah

Poupou Art Reflection

I accomplished combining cool and warm colour contrast in my artworks so
that the colours don’t clash. I am very satisfied with my artwork because it is
very symmetrical, smooth and scary which was my goal during the process.
I found it easy to make too mirrored copies of my pou pou. In the process, I
found it challenging to work with a limited amount of colours on each side,
because of the warm coloured side and the cold coloured side. I need to work
on adding more details such as maori patterns and being able to think beyond
with my art. If I were to change anything, I would change the arms and head
as they are both much bigger than the body. I would change the design of my
pou pou.

Room 1's Beautiful Daffodil Art

Spring has sure hit Room 1. Over these last three weeks Room 1 have been working hard in creating 3D Daffodils and mounting them onto A2 Black Paper. This project was rather fiddly to make and all that we used was paper, crayon, dye, scissors and glue. These flowers have made an impressive display in Room 1. They are all so bright and colourful. Gathering Weather Temperatures By Karla

Mode - temperature the most
Range - highest number subtract by the lowest
Average - Add the numbers and divide the number by the number of things.

The Average temperature - High aAuckland
14.3 degrees because 14x4+17= 73  divided by 5 = 14.3

The average temperature - Low Auckland
7x2+9+8+6= 37 divided by 5= 7.2 degrees

The high range of Auckland was 3 degrees celsius because if you subtract 14 from 17 it will be 3.
The low range for Auckland was 3 degrees celsius because if you subtract 6 from 9 it will be 3.

Majority of the day, the temperature was 14 degrees.
At night, most of the temperature was 7 degrees.

In Auckland the days are hotter and the nights are average.

In Auckland the hottest day was on Friday, the temperature was 17 degrees.
In Auckland, the coldest night was on Monday it was only 6 degrees.

Average temperature - High Christchurch
12+12+11+11+10= 56 Divided by 5= 11.2

Average temperature - Low Christchurch
3+3+4+2+1= 13
13 divided by 5= 2.6

The highest range of Christchurch was 1 because 12 minus 11 equals 1.
The lowest range of Christchurch was 3 because 4-1=3.

In the high, most of the day the temperature is 12.
In the low, most of the day the temperature is 3.

In Christchurch, the hottest day was on Monday it was 12 degrees.
In Christchurch, The coldest night was on Friday it was only 1 degree.

Do you like the song Poi e by the Patea Maori Club? We have got a very cool presentation with all of our Poupou Art that we created for Maori Language Week.
All of our Poupou Art is stuck onto the Room 1 window. Do pop by and view them. The best thing about this Poupou Art is that it is double sided and can be viewed inside and outside the classroom.

Narrative Writing: A Boy Named Timothy By Ferah

A Boy Named Timothy
Last night, I couldn’t sleep. The room was cold and crowded and had a weird vibe. At first, it seemed pitch black inside, but the balcony door hidden by the curtains showed swaying shadows of light.

My breath caught in my throat; as silent tears ran down my face. I curled up towards myself, knees drawn to my chest, elbows close to my body as my hands tightly clenched the blankets. Until I heard the first knock. With that, I thought nothing of it wiped my eyes and sat up. I crept out of my bed and opened my bedroom door with the expectation of someone like my parents or little brother standing at the door, but no. There was no one. The sound of my parents fighting often kept me awake, so seeing my little brother was a frequent occasion. Then I heard another knock, this time I was sure it was behind me. I slowly turned around and looked around the room as I instantly locked eyes with a boy, standing at my balcony window, waving as if I knew him. I closed the door and curiously but gradually walked over to my balcony door. He looked friendly so I opened my window first with cautiousness and said “Hello”, he replied with “Hi, I’m Timothy Green, I’m new here”. “Naveen Dunne” I answered as I gazed down at what he was wearing. “Brown hair, blue eyes, green pyjamas, dinosaur socks and a teddy bear, what an odd combination” I thought. “What’s keeping you up?” he asked. “I don’t know, what’s keeping you up?” I quickly replied. “I don’t sleep” he jokingly said. With a questioned facial I trustingly opened the door. “My parents are fighting, it’s hard to fall asleep when you keep hearing your name” I said. “Oh” he added, “Well, what’s it about?”. “Who knows” I announced “They fight about anything and everything”. “Why don’t you talk to them?” he asked. “Me, talk to my parents.” I angrily said. “Yes, maybe if you talk to them they’ll stop fighting. You know kids can help adults too” he implied. Hesitatingly I walked over to the door and I listened to the constant bickering of my parents.

Looking back at Timothy, he signaled me to go. I opened the door and stepped foot outside my room. I tiptoed over to the kitchen as I peeked around the wall. I took a deep breath, and entered the kitchen. Nervous, I stared at my parents arguing. I stayed so quiet they didn’t even notice I was there. “STOP IT!” I yelled “That’s enough”. My parents and I talked for hours about solving what they were fighting about. My mum was pregnant and we couldn’t afford to buy things for the baby. They said that keeping the baby would have meant less things for my brother and I. We decided to let my Aunt who couldn’t have babies take care of it.

As I went back to my room tired, I ran over to my balcony and noticed Timothy was still there. “Thankyou” I told him as the sky turned red. “It’s okay, at least you helped your parents out”. As I walked back to my bed, I turned around and Timothy disappeared. I would have gotten up to go find him but being up for hours made me feel sleepy. I think its cool how I was able to help my parents, with a little bit of help from a boy named Timothy.

Our Amazing Daffodil Art- a sneak preview

During these last three weeks, we have been working on creating 3D Daffodils. We had to create our own paper and dye it three times. Then Miss Paton gave us a pattern to assemble our daffodil flowers together.

Here are some finished ones. They look amazing in our classroom and add lots of brightness to our room. There will be more completed within the next few days.

The Mintie Challenge By Karla

The Mintie Challenge

Sayonara was the one that had the longest Mintie wrapper. It was 102 cm long. I think she had the
longest Mintie Wrapper because she took her time, she ripped small little pieces and she was very
patient. Nigel was the one that had the shortest wrapper. It measured 36.6 cm long. I think if Nigel was
patient enough like Sayonara, he would have got around the 50cm mark.

Unfortunately, there were no same measurement in our class, but the closest measurement to each
other were 44.3 and 44.9cm. The most common measurements are the 40s and 50s. For the range, I
subtracted 34.5 to 102 which equals 67.5cm

Zoo Trip Recount By AJ

CTK Zoo trip

On Friday 31st of August, the whole of Christ The King School went to Auckland Zoo. It was a
wonderful sunny day and we all got to experience some amazing animals and plants. We were
divided in different groups with our teachers and parent helpers.

When we arrived at Auckland Zoo, we were accompanied by a lady named Kirsty who told us
our schedule for the day and the safety rules. After that, we all went exploring with our adult
helper. The first part of the zoo my group visited was the Australian area. In the Australian
section, we got to see amazing animals and birds such as Wallabies, Tasmanian devils,
Sulphur-crested cockatoos and much more! My group and I, also visited the African side of the
zoo where we saw some big bulk mammals which were incredible! We saw tigers, lions, and
some fantastic elephants which linked perfectly to the writing we were doing on Asian and
African elephants.

My group and I, had an amazing opportunity to visit the NZCCM (New Zealand Centre for
Conservation Medicine). We also got to go inside a classroom where we got to learn lots of
information from a helpful man, Fraser. Fraser told us all about the previous polar bear and
lion that used to be in the zoo but both sadly died. The polar bear had died due to it’s skin
colour turning green because of the temperature they were in. Polar bears are used to being in
the Antarctic where it’s cold but since it’s hot here in Auckland, the colour of it’s skin was turning
green which caused their death. Our group got to see the toys that animals use to get their food
and we also got to watch a cool video on the staff at Auckland Zoo where they talk about their
job at the Zoo.

After our lesson with Fraser, we visited the NZCCM where we saw the tools the doctors use
to treat the animals. After a good session of learning, we got to see the tiger show which
featured the beautiful Mother and son tigers, Molique and Berani. The entertainment at the zoo
was something that kept you occupied for quite a while so even after all the walking we did, we
were still excited to see more and more! We all carried on exploring the zoo and taking photos
together. When it was time to leave, everyone gathered together to our meeting point at the
entrance where we were again accompanied by Kirsty. All the CTK students went on the buses
to go back to school and it started to pour down with rain. Luckily we were finished at the zoo
and it stayed sunny while we were there because we all had a fantastic time and took away
great memories with us!

Central Zones Volleyball

Today the Years 7 & 8 students had the Central Zones Volleyball Tournament at the North Shore Event Centre. It was a fantastic day and the girls were on form. They played amazingly well. For a small pool of students they did extremely well to beat some of the intermediate and private schools. They made themselves and our school proud. Congratulations girls for your hard effort today on the court. We came third overall.

Here are the results from todays games:

Kowhai Intermediate 56 - Christ the King School 25
Diocesan School 25 - Christ the King School 51
Remuera Intermediate 41 - Christ the King School 37
Auckland Normal Intermediate 35 - Christ the King School 46
Balmoral Intermediate 36 - Christ the King School 43
Pasedina Intermediate 15 - Christ the King School 44
Mt Roskill Intermediate 39 - Christ the King School 38

A big thank you to Virginia for giving up your precious time to coach the students, her sister Caroline Victor and to Mrs Kopua and Lisa (Karla's mother) for transporting our students to and from the North Shore Event Centre. We would not have had a team  to represent our school without you.

The Mintie Challenge By Melita

We are learning to measure Mintie wrappers and we enjoyed doing it. We had to gather information, graph the results and interpret the data.
Sayonara’s Mintie wrapper was the longest because she has a lot of patience. Her measurement was 102 cm.

Nigel’s Mintie wrapper was the shortest  because he didn’t have patience. He was in a hurry and must have ripped it.

His measurement was 36 cm.
The different between the longest wrapper and the shortest measured wrapper was 66.2cm.
The average measurement  was 59 cm
  • My wrapper was 57.5 cm. My wrapper was slightly below the average measurement
  • There was no mode number that appeared more than once, however there were measurements made between 40 & 50cm.
  • Betty and Rhianne measurement was almost the same Betty was 56.5cm and Rhianne was 56cm.
  • Twelve students were below the average measurement.
  • Ten students were above the average measurement.

A sneak preview of our Poupou Art

As part of Maori Language Week, Room 1 and the Year 6's from Room 3 made some double sided Poupou. The best thing about double sided artwork is that it can be looked at on both sides of the classroom-inside and outside of the classroom. Poupou are seen on most Marae in New Zealand and is a taonga to be treasured by all of us. The Poupou were made using pastel and lamination pockets. The finished Poupou are stuck onto Room 1's windows. Here are some of the finished Poupou and the artists who made them.
