Reading Project: Green House Effect By Cleo

This Term for Reading I've been researching about Green House Gases and what the Impact has on us humans. I managed to find out the four gases and what the impact has. The Impact is how many gases have been released. The gases trap too much heat and it warms the earth, but since we've been releasing too many gases the planet overheats which may cause overheating or even death. I've always seen stories of people overheating and dying, because of this reason and it needs to stop. The four gases are Carbon Dioxide, Methane, Nitrous and Water vapour.

Opinion Post: Is reusable, shareable 'family cloth' a good alternative to toilet paper?

Today we expressed our opinion on:
Is reusable, shareable 'family cloth' a good alternative to toilet paper? There was an article that was on the website: Stuff
This article links nicely to our sustainability unit on environmental issues that we are currently facing. There are lots of reasons against, but not many reasons for using this alternative toilet paper. Also there were questions that stemmed from reading this article. Today Miss Paton recorded our opinions, so it was very authentic and instant. It was wonderful to link our oral language into our learning. We are hoping to do more opinion pieces and share them with you as posts on our class blog.  We are keen to know your thoughts on this. Do you think this new sort of toilet paper will take off? Would you buy it? why / why not? and How environmentally friendly is this paper?

Comparing Occasional and Healthy Foods By Karla

Image result for healthy and unhealthy food

For health, we are learning about how to compare foods. On Friday March 9th, the senior hub walked to New World to write down Occasional & Everyday foods. We had to compare foods. We looked at how much fat, salt, sugar, energy and dietary fibre that were in Healthy and Occasional Foods.

Our Fonterra Milk in Schools Movie

Milk Movie Published version from Joy Marie on Vimeo.

Last week, we worked hard to create a movie for the Fonterra Richie's Milk Run competition. Mrs Kopua changed the lyrics to the kid's classic song - Oma Rapeti - to Oh Richie. We sang the song, then Miss Paton added some drum beats using the recording programme Garage Band. During the week, our lead dancer Havana choreographed the dance moves for the dance. It was such a fun project to be part of and the class did very well.

The competition prize is having the ex All Black captain Richie McCaw land his helicopter on the school grounds and to spend two hours with us. There are four schools that get chosen to win this grand prize.

AJ's Time at Softball

Softball tournament reflection 2018

“Wow, This is a really big field!” I said to myself. On Thursday the 1st of March,
we went to May Road Memorial Park where our softball tournament was held. As
my team and I were walking, we could feel the drops of wet grass going into our socks and
felt as if there was a washing machine inside our shoes. As soon as we got there,
we all started practising our pitching, catching, and throwing.
The horn squeaked as loud as my voice! The games had began!. For our very first game,
we versed Ponsonby Intermediate. We had lost against them but I thought that our team
did really well especially since it was our first softball game. We next had versed St.Joseph's
Onehunga and we scored more home runs than them but, when it was their turn to bat,
they didn’t go through all their players because they had run out of time so in softball it is
known as a nil draw. I was quite pleased that there was a draw because, it was only our second game
and we didn’t lose! “Phew” Already by the second game it was getting super duper hot.
It felt as if my face had been put in a burning hot frying pan! When we came to our very last game,
we versed Pasadena intermediate. By this point, my team and I were all really really tired
and our legs were hurting. We just all wanted to lay down. We still tried our best. It was finally
the end of our game and everyone was cheering each other on because we had won our game!
No matter if we won our games or not, we all had fun which was the main thing that mattered.
Plus, I guess, in this case, we’re all winners right!

Our softball results:

CTK (4) versus Ponsonby Intermediate (7)
CTK versus ST.Joseph’s Onehunga (DRAW)
CTK (6) versus Mt.Roskill intermediate (7)
CTK (1) versus Royal oak Intermediate (2)
CTK (2) versus Remuera Intermediate (7)
CTK (0) versus Waikowhai Intermediate (8)

CTK (10) versus Pasadena Intermediate (0)

My Softball Game By Sayonara

My time at softball

“ Yay,” I said in a sarcastic voice when we got to go to softball.
I really don’t like to try a new sport but I had no choice, there weren’t enough people.
The twins Charlee and Tiana were included to play softball with us on the day.

On the day Wesley Intermediate was the school that had put everything all together.
Even though it was a softball for girls they had boys to take down the scores, I found out something about the boys, they were Tongan.

It was my turn for batting nervousness was taking over my body once the ball came to me.  I had swung the bat but I missed it.
In some of the games I got people out and I got one or two home runs. Also, my batting improved a little in some of the games.

We played against Ponsonby Intermediate,  St Joseph's Onehunga, Mt Roskill Intermediate, Royal Intermediate, Remuera Intermediate, Waikowhai Intermediate and Pasadena Intermediate.
In our game, it was a close call on the points.
CTK (4) versus Ponsonby Intermediate (7),
CTK versus St Joseph’s Onehunga - Draw,
CTK (6) versus Mt Roskill Intermediate (7),
CTK (1) versus Royal Oak Intermediate (2),
CTK (2) versus Remuera Intermediate (7),
CTK (0) versus Waikowhai Intermediate (8),
CTK (10) versus Pasadena Intermediate (0).

In Conclusion, I had a fantastic time at softball, even though I wasn’t at school. I learned some things about our team. I found out when we versed St Joseph's Onehunga that the older twin was the captain and the catcher.
She is the same as Tiana because she was the captain and catcher, and the younger twins were both the pitcher.

My Time at the Cordis Hotel By Charlee

My Time at the Exclusive Hotel

As soon as I got my permission slip to go to a coding shop I thought it would
be extremely boring, but after all I was wrong. When I got in the minibus I felt
free. Singing as loud as I could made me so happy. Looking outside the
window at all the flash cars and the city. At the split second we were there.

It was fancy and posh. The first step in you could see a massive tv and a
long hallway. Our room was quite far away but I didn't mined because we got
to look around. As soon as I walked in our room I saw a big chandelier and lots
of computers. In my mind I thought we were sharing the room with another
school but after all we didn’t.

We met this man called Michael and a lady called Sarah. They told us how to
use scratch so we could make a game called Ghostbusters. It was a bit hard
but I finished it in the end. I was really happy for myself and my friends.
My teachers had a go at making their own and it was very funny to watch.
There were people who came from other countries to come in and out to
check our work they were very nice. The people where from the D5 summit.
There were cameras coming to take photos of us and videos.

I found it very interesting and I don’t think I wasted my time at all.
I loved it how it was all girls and it wasn't too crowded. I would love to go there
again. I can’t what to do some of this inside of our class.

AJ's Coding Experience

My Coding Experience

“Yay! I’m so excited to be here today and have a great opportunity like this” I said to myself.
As we got to our destination at the Cordis Hotel in the city,
there was a lady named Sarah who welcomed us and led us into our coding room.
“Wow!, the room is big and is full of cords and laptops!”
From what I could see, today was going to be very fun and exciting.
The first thing we did was we sat on the mat and there was a guy named Michael,
who talked to us about what we were going to be learning.
Then Me, Melianna, and Ferah did rock, paper, scissors, to see who got to talk on the radio
which unfortunately didn’t happen in the end.
We learnt how to code and we also learnt how to make a Ghostbusters game.
We used an app called Scratch. I had used the app before, but I had never made a game
using it.
We had to do all sorts of things like choosing a background, choosing a Sprite/ Sprites (Character/s)
and also picking out some cool music. The theme I had gone for in my GhostBusters game was to be
spooky and scary at the same time. It was pretty cool to play around with the app and we
also had
instructions which made everything a whole lot easier. Everything was quite interesting
because it was nice to learn some new things with different people.
Speaking of different people, we got to meet some people from many different countries.
These specific countries were also known as the D5.
The D5 consists of five countries which are:
South Korea, New Zealand, Estonia, Israel, and the United Kingdom.
There were also camera people videoing us and taking photos of us.
When most people completed their game, some of the girls presented their work to the rest of
the class.
The point of the game was to capture the Ghostbuster/s and when you catch them/ it , you score points.
It was so much fun at the cordis hotel and I would love to go back there again!

Reducing Your Carbon Footprint By Cathy

Image result for carbon footprint

This term the class has been learning about the topic: Sustainability.
In Reading the students have been working on individual projects, researching information using a variety of sources, such as books, YouTube Sustainability Playlist, websites and search engines such as Kiddle. Here is Cathy's presentation on Reducing your Carbon Footprint. This links to the topic of Climate Change.

This year Miss Paton showed us Powtoon. Powtoon is a website that we can use. We can use this website to make videos. Using Powtoon I made a video about what is our carbon footprint and how to reduce your carbon footprint.

This is my Powtoon that I made:

Our time at Dean Greenwood Swim School

Yesterday we had a fabulous time at the Dean Greenwood Swim School. We were very lucky that we had the same instructors from last year. Some of us were floating on our backs with confidence, others were floating with a flutter board and others were doing freestyle and star fish in the pool. We were all pleased with our accomplishments and look forward to our next swimming lesson on Wednesday March 14th.
